My Ideal Road trip

I am studying in the University of Mississippi in the State of Mississippi. Since I am on summer vacation, I am going to plan a road trip. My final destination is Niagara Falls which is on the border between the State of New York in the U.S.A and Canada. I am planning to see it from New York side. On the way to go to Niagara Falls, I will stop by some famous places. Here is my road trip plan!! I start from Oxford, Mississippi and I take route 30 and go up to north to Nashville. At Franks Town, I change the rout to rout 45 and go up to north. After that I change the route to 64 and just keep going and I face route 65 so I take the route. If I go up to North along route 65, I arrive at Nashville. I enjoy the city of there and go to country music’s bar because country music was born in Nashville. I also enjoy the restaurant there. After two days of stay in Nashville, I start my road trip again. If I go on route 65, I go through the State of Kentucky. Kentucky is famous for horse races so I stop by Kentucky to watch a horse race. I stay there for two days and start my road trip again. If I go up to north I face route 71 so I change the route to 71 and keep going up to north. If I go up to the north on route 71, I go through the State of Ohio. I think that I drive too much until I get there so I stay in a hotel for one night. The hotel is near the Lake Erie. The Lake Erie is one of the great lakes. On the following day, I take route 90 and go through Pennsylvania. Before I get to Niagara Falls I would like to stop by the State of New York. Since New York is the state next to Pennsylvania, I can easily visit. I have a friend who lives in New York so I visit him and meet his family and hang out. I go to Manhattan to see famous places, for instance, Times Square, the Statue of Liberty and Empire State building etc…. After enjoy my stay in New York for four days, I head for Niagara Falls again. I take route 80 and after that I take route 90 and just go up to Niagara Falls. If I go on route 90 to north, I finally arrive at Niagara Falls. I stay there for three days and enjoy the view of Niagara Falls from the side of America. After I enjoy my stay there, I go back to Oxford, in Mississippi.

Last winter vacation, I went to New York to visit my friend. I stay there for three weeks. It has been one of my aims to see Niagara Falls because it is one of the biggest falls in the world and it has tremendous view. I was planning to visit Niagara Falls in my stay in New York since I had enough time to visit there. However my friend’s step father told me that if you go there in winter it is going to be no fun. The place is very cold and the fall is frozen so I had to quit going there. That is the reason why I planned this road trip here.

A VIce Advertisement

This is an antidrug advertisement which could be shown in my country, Japan. We always say” Drug is bad. Drug is bad”. However we also use drug in good way, for instance, to cure our body. Drug can be very helpful for us but once you misuse it, drug can destroy your future. We can find drug in any country nowadays although it is illegal in most of countries. It is not illegal in some county. Why it is illegal is that drug can not only kill you but also can kill other people. In China, if you just hold some marijuana, there is a possibility that you can get capital punishment. This occurrence happened recently. When some Japanese men tried smuggling some marijuana to Japan from China, they were arrested and got capital punishment. Holding marijuana is also big crime in Japan, too. If you hold just a little marijuana, you have to be in a jail for about two years. You may be killed by drug if you addicted by it. If you addicted, of course, you won’t be able to control your body. Imagine what will happen next!! You may commit suicide. You may drive a car with uncontrollable body and you get an accident and die. It is no problem just you get problem and just you suffer from drug. However the consequences of drug make your family sad and even can kill other people. If you are found when you hold drug, of course, you will be arrested. Police come to your house with handcuffed you to investigate your house. Your family absolutely won’t be able to stand watching that you. Since you go back to your home with handcuff and police, your neighbors will notice you did something wrong and they spread your gossip to their acquaintances and you will be famous in your local area in bad way. Since you become famous in bad way, you won’t be able to live in that area any more. Drug use can destroy your future and can make your family sad. Even worse, you kill other people. For instance, if you addicted drug, you may commit murder with uncontrollable body. If you drive a car with uncontrollable body you may crash into other people and kill them. As I told you here, using drug is very dangerous. It can destroy your future and can make your family sad and even can kill other people. For those reason, you must not use drug under no circumstances.

I picked up drug because it is very serious problem not only in Japan but also around the world. I designed this advertisement for everybody who lives in Japan. In general, those kinds of advertisement in Japan are very descriptive and stated very serious problems. For instance, “If you do this, this is going to happen as a consequence.” It also has pictures which show something bad for a vise. Those advertisements are put up everywhere from in school to at the station.

Perfect Language Schools

For Homework Week 11, I created three perfect language schools with my group mates. One is a language school in Chile and one is a language school in Japan and one is a language school in America. The school in Chile would be for high school students. Location would be Santiago which is capital of Chile because Wladimir from Chile would like to put the school in a city not country side. If he puts it in a city many students can come to the school. One class would have about 25 students. The school would have huge library which has a variety of books and internet access. One teacher would be in a class. Teachers may bring an assistant teacher. The school would also provide us field trips. The school would have own slogan to advertise. School rules would depend on students. What students would like to do would be rules. There would be from 1 to 7 grades. 5 is acceptable and sometimes 4 is ok. For disability students, everybody has to try to help them. If a student made a problem, they would get punishment. The punishment would be giving more homework because it can be helpful for students. All teachers don’t need to be native English speakers. Teachers can chose whatever method they want to teach. Parents sometimes have to participate in field trip to get closer with their children. School schedule would be from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It would be trisemesters. Holidays and important days will be respected. Tuition wouldn’t be expensive. Sometimes, government gives money to students as scholarship. The class contents would be basic skills, reading, listening, and writing. Homework due would be one week after given. Punctuality would go to their grade. This is their responsibility. We also created a language school in Japan. The place would be in Osaka. Osaka is the second big city in Japan. The biggest city is Tokyo. I think if we put the school in Tokyo, it would be no place to go as field trips because there are just so many buildings in Tokyo. Comparing to Tokyo, Osaka has much more place to visit as field trips although it is very big city. If we put a school in a city there would be more opportunities to use language then country side because we have to use language in a restaurant, train station and shop etc… There would be 10 students in a class because if we have small class, students can have more opportunities to practice speaking. Attendance would be the most important part to gain grade. Students have to respect teachers. Teachers have to wear suit in a class. Student can wear whatever they want in a class. Parents sometimes have to participate in a field trip to get closer with their children. School schedule would be from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students wouldn’t receive a lot of homework but they have to give it to their teacher in time. The language school in America would be private school. The classes would be held after regular time classes. It would be in a big city, Las Vegas, Boston or New York. Memphis would be big enough size. Even and Elizabeth from America would like to put language school in a big city since few people would come to a language school in a country side. There would be from 10 to 20 students in a class. Elizabeth prefers men and women are separated. The classes are divided by language level. It doesn’t matter how students perform in their class since the school is after regular time class. Classes would be held from Monday to Thursday from 4p.m. to 6 p.m. Parents may also go to the class because they also would like to improve their English skill. Teachers would be crazy in attendance. Grade would depend on each student’s progress. It is possible to kick students out from the school if students cause trouble to other students.

The Way to Compliment and Insult

With my group mates, I acted in some situations. For first A of 1 we had to say something to the person who insulted my dinner date or be said something. Most of us said almost the same thing like “What are you saying? She/He is my date. Don’t say anything about her/him.” Then, the person who was said in that way responded like this “I just said what I thought.” Nobody apologized about what they had said. For B of 1, we go out to eat with my best friend and find a man or woman who looks a lot like with our fiancé. All of us agreed with what we would do if we were in the situation. We would just leave from the situation as soon as possible without saying anything. For B of 2, we are invited to boss’s house and his wife gives quick tour and we had to compliment. Here, an interesting difference appeared. I, Japanese, just kept saying “Nice!!” or “Great!!” without adding any word but my group mates from America said “Nice!!” or “Great!!” and added detail information about the place why it is good. For B of 2, we are brought to a company party and we meet our coworkers and our boss. We had to offer a word of appreciation and a compliment word when we were about to leave. Everybody would also say the same thing. “Thank you for inviting me to this party. This party was great. I enjoyed very much” For A of 3, we had to congratulate a friend although she is not a pregnant. I and Evan acted in the same way. Soon after we noticed that she is not a pregnant, we just apologized about what we had said. Elizabeth form America acted in a different way. She twisted her word and she made it her friend’s fault. For B of 3, we meet old friend from college and the friend says about my pregnancy although I’m not pregnant. All of us acted in the same way. We just flowed what she/he had said like “It’s ok!” and left from the situation. For A of 4, we had to motivate a student as a math teacher in the hallway. Evan and Elizabeth motivated the student seeming strictly as a teacher but I just complimented the student with some words. Even and Elizabeth explained more detail point than I did about what the student achieved before. For B of 4, we are students who are taking advanced calculus and get a compliment in the hall way. Evan was a little bit embarrassed and said “Thank you very much!” Elizabeth and I just said “Thank you very much!!” happily. In Japan, women describe more detail than men does. If the person is our friend, we insult in sarcastic or direct way. If the person is not our friend, we insult indirectly. I think in the United States people insult and compliment anything more directly than we do.

Beauty

I watched a video about Japanese subculture, “Gothic Lolita”. Since I am Japanese, I was familiar with it at least more than other people but I didn’t know some of the stories about it. The video was shot on a bridge in Harajuku, Tokyo. Many Gothic Lolita girls are on the bridge. Gothic Lolita is the girl who wears gothic clothes or the clothes which princesses wear. What the video talked about was that the costume came from England and spread to certain group of Japanese girls. In the video, one gothic Lolita girl talked about the group of Gothic Lolita. There are two kinds of Gothic Lolitas. One usually doesn’t wear the costume but when they hang out with Gothic Lolita friends, they dress up in that way. The other girls wear it every day. We also call them “Otaku”. Otaku is the people who are crazy in something. For instance, People who are crazy in Animation are Animation Otaku. Chile also has that kind of people. They dress up like famous musicians. Boys and girls do that. They also dye their hair green or pink etc… They also paint their face. To make fun of them, other people call them “Pokemon”. America also has that kind of people who dress up differently from others. They even go to school with the costume. The aspect of beauty is changeable depending on the trend of the age. For instance, Marilyn Monroe had had big influence for fashion in America before but it is changing. Avril Lavigne has had big influence for fashion recently. The aspect of beauty is also different depending on the regions. For instance, southern people prefer country music in America so their aspect is that the musician of country music is beautiful or cool. In northern part of America, people prefer pop or rock music so their aspect is totally different from southern people. The aspect of beauty is also different depending of their age. In Japan, the length of skirt of high school students is different depending on regions. Each region has own popularity. If we dress up differently from other people of our group, they laugh at us. There are some people like Gothic Lolita in our group. They usually have depression, so they want to show themselves differently to other people. Who decide what beauty is ourselves. Media also gives us a lot of choices but the person who decides is ourselves after all. These are the aspects of beauty of my group mates and me. A man from Chile doesn’t care about appearance except for Gothic Lolita. He cares only about personality. A man from America said that it is changeable but now, he cares personality and physical appearance. He wants her to take care of him and be healthy. He wants to have a lot of in common with her. I care physical appearance as well as personality. I also want to have in common with her. People who have a lot of common can be beautiful.

American Culture

I watched a video about American culture. In the video, a lot of pictures of American culture appeared such as Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Star Bucks, Madagascar, Mickey Mouth, Cinderella, Dunkin Donuts, Mossimo, Coca-Cola. This video showed me most of American culture because it talked about American food, weather, music, what to do for fun and American’s looks. I didn’t see what I wanted to see, for example American holidays or school system etc… Talking about food, I almost agree with everything what the video said but I don’t agree an answer which Americans eat bread a lot. I rarely see when Americans eat bread although I have been here almost 8 months. I agree with others such as Americans eat Macaroni cheese, Mashed potato, Pizza, Steak, Hamburger, Fried Chicken rice caw, pig, cow and Donuts. Many people talked about weather of America but the opinions from some of them are different. Some of them said that it’s very hot, not humid and dried. Some people said that rain a lot, wind, storm and tornado. Others said that it’s very cold and a lot of snow. Why their opinions are different was that I think they were thinking about different part of America. As we know, America is a very big country with has 50 states. The weather among north, south, east and west are very different. Americans like a variety of music such as Dance music, Gasp, Rock, Rock & Roll, Hip Hop, Classic and country. Americans do a lot of things for fun such as camping, barbecue, playing a game eating chips, going to a part and doing Frisbee, chasing butterfly, flying in an airplane, skiing, playing with cats, playing computer games, running, going to beach, flying kite and dance party. I do most of them for fun like an Americans but I sometimes go to Karaoke, restaurant or amusement park for fun. People from other countries think Americans are big, and fat, white or black. They have also beautiful blond hair, long legs, high nose and blown or blue eyes. My opinions about Americans’ appearance how to have fun haven’t changed at all from before but my opinions about food and weather and music have changed a lot. I expected food in a restaurant is not expensive in America but actually it’s more very expensive than my expectation. I expected that weather in Mississippi is very worm all the year because it is south but it’s very cold and sometimes it snows in winter. I expected Pop music is very popular in every states but it was wrong. Depending on a state, the popular music is different. Here, in south, usually country music or Jazz are very popular. I think America has diversified cultures because there are so many races and nationalities. America is also very interesting country. If I ask “What is the official language in America?” Everybody may answer “It is English.” but actually it is wrong. America doesn’t have any official language. A variety of languages are spoken in America.

The Visit to Hospitals

This story happens in the University of Washington Medical Center. A car crashed against a sixteen years old kid riding a bicycle coming from a movie. His name is Belly. His grandmother permitted for organ donation once before but she changes her mind because Belly squeezed back. She believes he is still alive. One of doctors decides to take special examination. The Belly’s father has gone and nobody reaches his mother. According to the medical examination, the functions of his brain and stomach are not working any more so he is dead. A nurse and a man doctor are talking whether donating or not because it makes the grandmother sad. The man doctor talks with two nurses from Chicago. They have something in common because the doctor was a resident in Chicago before. The man doctor starts to counsel for the grandmother. She doesn’t have children except for Maressa, the Belly’s mother. She tells the doctor about Belly. He is wonderful, cool, funny, generous, loves music and has lots of friends. The grandmother finally allows donating Belly’s organs because they can save a lot of people’s life. The organs are used to help people. The video which I saw was serious situation. There are some similarities between Japanese hospitals and American hospitals for that kind of situation. If someone is injured and carried to a hospital, the family usually goes to the hospital to talk with a doctor. Of course, the family doesn’t believe the death first so the doctor takes a special examination and gives evidence to the family. The distance between doctors and patients are also usually very close in Japan like what I was in this video. On the other hand, there are some differences between Japanese hospitals and American hospitals. We don’t usually donate organs after death unless the person prefers to donate them because it makes the family sad. I don’t think hospitals offices really operate like what I saw in this video. This is the story of Japan. There are a lot of problems in hospitals. A doctor doesn’t examine patients properly, does crime to earn a lot of money, hides a mistake and doesn’t take care of patients and the families at all. Those are totally different from what I saw in this video. I think those matters are also happening in the United States so I don’t think hospitals offices really operate like what I saw. I think there are no differences for a typical visit to hospitals between in Japan and in the United States except for the language. When we feel disease or get injured we go to a hospital and tell the symptoms. We are examined and the doctor treats us properly. When we have serious disease or injurer, we stay in a hospital for a while to be treated. We talk a lot even about personal things with a doctor because the distance between doctors and patients are usually very close. Some of the treatment fee is covered by our insurance. I think most of the things are very similar to in America.

The Superheroes

For this week’s assignment, I investigated about superheros in Japan and America. Although there are some similarities, I also found some differences. Many superheroes came out. For instance, Inspector Gajet, Teen Tighton, Trans Former, Spider Man, Bad Man, Super Girls, X-Man, kids next door and Ranger series from America. We have Draemon as a superhero and Renger series from Japan. Superheroes had been for only boys but they are becoming for boys and girls. There were three people in my group so we picked up one superhero each and talked about them. Our nationalities are one Japanese and two Americans. As Japanese, I talked about Doraemon. It is one of the most popular superhero in Japan and around the world because the story is translated into a lot of languages. The story is different between on TV and in a movie. Draemon is a robot shaping a cat which came from future to help an elementary school boy called Nobita. Nobita is a very stupid boy and always gets problem in his daily life. Draemon gives special equipment to him whenever he gets problem to help him. It is a story on TV. In a movie, Doraemon and Nobita and their friends go to a different world which usually has a problem to help people there. A movie of Draemon is usually created based on an environmental problem so it is very educational for kids. One of my American group mate talked about Bad Man. Bad Man has two lives. One is business man and the other one is super hero. He has gray or black cape. He has lots of enemies. Most famous ones are Jorker and Tow face. He uses his real power and magic from science. His parents are killed. That’s why he became Bad Man. He protects Gothan city which is like New York City with his power. He has a partner celled Robin. She is younger than him. He always wants to live in normal life. Bad Man has a cartoon, too. He is like half Asian and half American in the cartoon. The other my American partner talked about Teen Titan. This is a ranger series. There are 5 superheroes in this story. All of them are from different planets and teenagers. They live in the same city and always fight against bad guys. They are wearing different color’s capes and they can transform. There are some similarities among super heroes. All of them are toward for kids and becoming more educational. Every superhero protects something. There is also a difference. For instance, the contents are sometimes very different depending on countries because superheroes are usually reflected by the country’s culture or politics etc… I think Bad Man and Teen Titan present America inaccurately because those have a lot of violent scenes and destroying sense. On the other hand, Doraemon presents Japan accurately because the story includes educational matters. If I could create a super hero for my culture, my super hero would be based on a problem in Japan because it is very useful to educate kids. They can enjoy learning with watching superhero.

The Eating Customs

I had lunch at the Jhonson Commons with my group mates to find out cultural differences while we are eating. I investigated the differences of table settings, table manners, appropriate dress and dinner conversation topics. I found some interesting differences from my country.
Table settings are very different depending on countries. In America, People eat at a table. The table can be square and circle. In Japan and Chile, the tables are usually square. We sometimes eat on the floor with short length table in Japan. People use only knives, spoons and forks but in Japan, We use chopsticks as well as those. In America, the main food is chicken but it depends. For instance the main food in Texas is beef. In Chile, the main food is pork and beef. In Japan, the main food is fish. The eating amount is also different depending on countries. People usually eat for casual dishes two or three courses but for a big event, for instance, Thanksgiving Day they eat a lot. In my culture, the eating amount is depending on families. My mother cooks a lot so I usually eat five or six courses for a meal but like in America we also eat a lot for a big event, New Year etc…
The customs of table manners are also different depending on countries. We have the same custom for leaving food. In our countries, we cannot leave food on the plates. We cannot leave especially rice in Japan because it insults our ancestors. Whenever I left even a piece of rice when I was a kid, my mother got angry at me. In America, they have to keep the hand which doesn’t have anything on their lap and put a piece of napkin on their lap. People cannot talk with full of mouth while we are eating in Japan, America and Chile. When they want to talk they have to cover their mouths or talk after swallowing the food. In America and Chile, they pray for god before eating. In Japan, we say “Itadakimasu” before eating and “Gochisousamadesita” after eating to appreciate the food. When we are invited by a host and once we take food on our plate, we have to eat it even if it is not tasty. This is in common in three of those countries. In Japan, we have to wait for other people get ready to eat. If it is a formal situation people have to wait in America and Chile, too. Depending on a situation, children are sometimes not allowed to sit at the same table with adults in America. In the case, Children sit at a table which is for children away from adults.
For appropriate dress, we can wear anything we want in a casual situation but if it’s a formal situation we have to wear a suit in Japan, America and Chile. When we eat, we have to take off our jackets even though it’s not formal situation and relating to business.
We in Japan, America and Chile usually have conversation a lot when we are in a restaurant. We can usually have conversation a lot because it takes for a long time until food comes and check comes at a table. We don’t talk about politics and religion and grotesque topics.
It was very interesting to see the eating customs of the other cultures.

Thanksgiving Day

I am planning to have a party for Thanksgiving Day. In America, Thanksgiving party is held on the forth of Thursday in November. The origin of Thanksgiving Dayis that long long time ago, people in America suffered from cold weather in a winter. They managed to survive cooperating with each other. They harvested a lot in the following autumn so they had a party with a lot of food to appreciate the god. It is the origin of Thanksgiving. Americans think that Thanksgiving is one of the biggest holidays in an year. All family gather and have big lunch or dinner together. It's usually difficult to meet altogether except for the holiday because some of them live in away from their family. The traffic is usually very busy on the day because everybody goes back to their homes. People eat turkey for Thanksgiving dishes. Because many turkeys are killed on the day, president of the United States do "Turkey Pardon" in the morning. I'm going to have the pary in the Elizabeth's house which is in Oxford on November 25th Thursday at 12:00 p.m. I'm planning to watch a football game with everybody in her house after the lunch. People in America usually watch football game after lunch on Thanksgiving day because it's end of the season and the game is very important for Super Ball. I'm going to invite Wladimir, Evan, Nelson who is a organizer in the Intensive English Program, Gabliera, Ruis, Edo, Marge, Karo and Loleto who are friends of Wladimir from Chile.I'm going to also invite Lee and Minji who are my friends from South Korea. I'm going to also invite Jill who is Elizabeth's best friend and Aaron who is her husband. I'm going to also invite Blake, Jorgea who are teachers in the Intensive English Proglam and Josh who is Evan's best friend. I'm going to invite the guests by an e-mail which says "Hey. We will have a Thanksgiving party in Elizabeth's house which is located at 114CR 434. The party bigines at 12:00 p.m. Thanksgiving dish may be served but everybody please bring a dish. We will watch a football game after the party." We will have Turkey, Dressing, Cranbery, Gravy, Apple Pie, Salad, Pampkin Pie, Sweet Poteto Pie, Beer, Wine, Sweet Tea and water. We will use plastic knives and dishes because those are very easy to clean up. We also bring some chairs, tables and couches to eat the dishes and watch the football game for everybody. Why I chose this party is that this is one of the most important holidays in America and I have enjoyed Thanksgiving Day last year. We don't usually have a party but when we have a party this is almost same as a party in Japan but we don't watch football game after a party and we don't eat the same food. A Thanksgiving party is almost the same as the New Year's party in Japan. All family gather on the day to eat dinner and watch TV.

Breaking a Social Norm

I have broken a social norm recently with my group mates. There are one Japanese and two Americans in our group. What we have done was that we investigated people's reaction. First, we went to the computer area on the 1 st floor in the library and I sat on the floor with reading a textbook although there is a chair next to me. There are few people on the area but no one cared because they might have thought sitting on the floor with reading a textbook is my cultute. I am oviously not from America. Next, we tried to shake hands with left hand with people we don't now and we saw their reaction. Why we chose this topic was because we wanted to see the diffrences between people's reaction when I, Japanese, do and Americans do. It was certainly different. First, an American man went to a coffee shop and ordered a cup of black coffee and shook hands with the shoper. The shoper a little bit hesitated to do it and talked about it with another shoper after he left. Next, I shook hands after borrowing a book with a receptionist. She didn't care and hegitate to do that. She even smailed for me. She thought shaking hands with left hand is my culture. Next, an American woman tried to shake hands after borrowing a book. The receptionist reacted with the same way as the coffee shoper. The coffee shoper and the receptionist seemed that they thought it was weird because they are Americands. Americans usually shake hands with their right hands. We shook hands again each but the result was the same. It was quite interestiong investigation because people's reactions were different although we did the same thing.
